“Trump has more tune with Sheinbaum than with Europe, Canada and China: in Mexico there is surprise”

Roberto Zepeda, Doctor of Political Science from the University of Sinaloa and an expert in international relations, talks about the effects of tariffs imposed by Donald Trump, highlighting the differences in the negotiation between the United States, Canada and Mexico. Zepeda explains that while Canada has responded quickly and forcefully with retaliation measures, Mexico has opted for a more diplomatic approach, looking for a dialogue and avoiding the imposition of reciprocal tariffs at the moment. And, he emphasizes that “Trump has more tune with Sheinbaum than with Europe, Canada and China: in Mexico there is surprise.”

As for the global situation, he believes that these tariffs could reconfigure international trade and affect both countries directly involved, and the United States, generating greater costs for consumers and hindering their economic objectives, such as the reduction of inflation. In addition, it emphasizes that tariffs can be a temporary negotiation strategy, since Trump could use them to obtain greater concessions on other issues, such as security and migration.
