The president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, and his counterpart at Banco Santander, Ana Botín, were the highest paid executives on the Ibex 35 in 2022, only behind the former president of Inditex, Pablo Isla, who received 27.21 million euros. euros in 2022, of which 23 million corresponded to his settlement.
Sánchez Galán, who ceased to be CEO of Iberdrola in October 2022 but remains in the presidency, received a remuneration of 12.67 million euros last year, 1.6% less than the previous year, while Botín earned 11.74 million euros in 2022, with an annual reduction of 4.5%.
The former CEO of Banco Santander, José Antonio Álvarez, was the fourth highest paid executive on the Ibex 35, with 9.58 million euros in 2022 (-1.6%), followed by his counterpart at Inditex, Óscar García Maceiras, who received 8.37 million in his first full year in office.
This is clear from the reports submitted by the Ibex 35 entities to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) on the remuneration of its board of directors, in the absence of publication of ArcelorMittal data.
ISLA (INDITEX) RECEIVES MORE THAN 27 MILLION
The one who was president of Inditex until March 2022, Pablo Isla, received a total remuneration of 27.21 million euros last year, of which 23 million were in settlement, compared to the 12.44 million he received in 2021.
For his part, the group’s CEO, Óscar García Maceiras, obtained 8.37 million euros in his first full year at the helm of the company, of which 6.9 million corresponded to his salary, which included 4.79 million euros as variable remuneration.
The current president of Inditex, Marta Ortega, received 834,000 euros in her first year in office, a figure that corresponded entirely to her fixed remuneration.
The entire board of the textile company, made up of twelve members, was the best paid in the 2022 financial year, since it received 38.7 million euros, an increase of 82.3% compared to 21.23 million in the year former.
SÁNCHEZ GALAN (IBERDROLA), ALMOST 13 MILLION
Discounting the extraordinary remuneration that Isla obtained as a settlement, the president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, was the highest paid executive on the Ibex 35 in the financial year of 2022, with a remuneration of 12.67 million euros in the year in which He left the position of CEO.
This amount was 1.6% lower than in 2021, when he received 12.88 million euros, and only half of this remuneration corresponded to the manager’s salary (6.35 million euros), including 3.25 million in variable remuneration.
The new CEO of energy, Armando Martínez, in office since October 2022, pocketed 3.24 million euros last year, while the company’s council as a whole, made up of fifteen members, received 22.13 million euros, 6% more than the previous year.
BOTÍN (BANCO SANTANDER) EARNED 4.5% LESS, WITH 11.7 MILLION
The president of Banco Santander, Ana Botín, received a remuneration of 11.74 million euros in 2022, which translates into a reduction of 4.5% compared to the 12.29 million she received the previous year.
Of the total paid, Botín received 7.23 million euros for salary, including 3.15 million for short and long-term variable remuneration.
For his part, the former CEO of the banking firm, José Antonio Álvarez, pocketed 9.58 million euros in his last year in office, 1.6% less than the previous year, when he received 9.73 million.
The Banco Santander board as a whole, made up of seventeen members, obtained a total remuneration of 26.29 million euros in 2022, only behind the amount obtained by the Inditex directors.
ACS, TELEFÓNICA AND FLUIDRA EXCEED 14 MILLION IN REMUNERATIONS
The ACS construction company distributed 17.58 million euros among its 17 directors in 2022, one of the highest sums on the Ibex, behind Inditex, Banco Santander, Iberdrola and BBVA.
However, the remuneration of ACS executives was not one of the highest on the Ibex: its executive president, Florentino Pérez, pocketed 6.65 million euros, while its CEO, Juan Santamaría, received 2.78 million for the eight months he had been in office.
Behind ACS, the Telefónica board (made up of 15 members) obtained a total remuneration of 14.64 million euros last year, with a reduction of 20.7% compared to the 2021 figure.
The president of the telecommunications firm, José María Álvarez-Pallete, received 6.79 million euros, and its CEO, Ángel Vilá, 5 million, with year-on-year falls of 22.2% and 24.5%, respectively.
For their part, the thirteen Fluidra directors pocketed a sum of 14.46 million euros in 2022, 254.8% more than the previous year. Its CEO, Bruce W. Brooks, earned 8.04 million euros (+379.4%), while its president, Eloy Planes, received 5.19 million (+305.9%).
THE EXECUTIVES OF SANTANDER AND BBVA LEAD THE BANKING AND INSURANCE SECTOR
Behind Botín and Álvarez (Banco Santander), the president of BBVA, Carlos Torres, was the highest paid executive in the banking and insurance sector in 2022, with a remuneration of 7.58 million euros, which was 22.6 % higher than the 6.18 million received the previous year.
Likewise, the CEO of BBVA, Onur Genç, led the ranking among his peers in 2022, when he pocketed 6.61 million euros. The entire board of the banking firm, made up of sixteen members, received a total sum of 18.8 million euros, the fourth highest in the Ibex.
The CEO of CaixaBank, Gonzalo Gortázar, was the next highest-paid executive in the sector, with a remuneration of 3.22 million euros in 2022 (+8.9%), followed by his counterpart at Banco Sabadell, César González-Bueno , which received 2.48 million euros (+30%).
The CEO and Chairman of Mapfre, Antonio Huertas, received a remuneration of 2.23 million euros in 2022 (-6.1%), while the CEO of Bankinter, María Dolores Dancausa, received 1.56 million (+10 %), and his counterpart at Unicaja Banco, Manuel Menéndez, 758,000 euros for the six months he was in office in 2022.
REYNÉS (NATURGY) AND ENTRECANALES (ACCIONA), LEADING ENERGY COMPANIES
Behind the executives of Iberdrola, the president and CEO of Naturgy, Francisco Reynés, was the best paid in the energy sector in 2022, with a remuneration of 5.86 million euros, 18% more than the year former.
In third position was the president and CEO of Acciona, José Manuel Entrecanales, who received a sum of 5.28 million euros in 2022, with an increase of 7.5% compared to the 4.91 million he received in 2021. .
For his part, the CEO of Repsol, Josu Jon Imaz, obtained a remuneration of 4.14 million euros last year (-2.5%), while the president of the oil company, Antonio Brufau, pocketed 2.81 million (+1.4%).
Endesa’s CEO, José Bogas, received 2.47 million euros in 2022, a figure similar to the 2.3 million earned by the former Enagas director, Marcelino Oreja, for the two months he was in office last year. His successor, Arturo Gonzalo Aizpiri, pocketed 1.62 million euros in his first year at the helm of the firm.
The managers of the rest of the energy companies listed on the Ibex 35, Acciona Energía, Redeia and Solaria, received remuneration of less than one million euros in 2022.
